ALGOANE, OUR TERRITORY

The sea
The composition of seawater is amazing: it is 96.5 % made up of pure water, and the remainder breaks down into salts and other chemical elements (fluorine, sulphur, potassium, calcium).

Seawater is perfectly balanced and contains all elements that our metabolisms need (trace elements, vitamins, minerals, iodine, etc.), and its concentration is fairly similar to that of blood plasma.

Seaweed
Seaweed has the amazing ability to concentrate the sea’s wealth of minerals and trace elements and to restore these benefits up to 20,000 times more intensely: fortifying, remineralizing and re-balancing.

Seaweed offers fantastic benefits which the epidermis and – the body in general - really needs:
  • it stimulates the blood circulation,
  • it tones the skin tissues,
  • it detoxifies and helps to restore a water, protein, vitamin and mineral balance.

Only 1% of the immense diversity of seaweed is exploited for cosmetic purposes, so there is considerable research potential.

Brittany

Brittany enjoys a unique geographical position under the influence of the Gulf Stream whose amazing natural conditions ensure the quality of the seaweeds which are used to make Algoane beauty care products:

  • A stable, moderate water temperature: seaweed lives at a depth where the temperatures do not vary a great deal: 10 to 11° C in winter and 14 to 15° C in summer.
  • The choppiness of the water: the conditions are perfect in Brittany because these are the 2nd largest tides in the world with intervals of 6 hours and 10 m of tidal range (the water height between low and high tide), which allows excellent oxygenation.
  • Light: So the clarity of the Iroise Sea is beneficial and helps to ensure the photosynthesis of the seaweed. The combination of these three conditions allows the development of large quantities of seaweed.

Almost 80,000 tonnes of seaweed are harvested in Brittany every year, which is almost all of the French harvest.

This means that the Iroise Sea is the largest seaweed field in Europe, with more than 800 types of seaweed!
